Color Specialist Charlotte Panico Muffitt from Joseph Michael’s Salon

With more than 25 years of experience this master colorist has been all around the country  and is now back in her hometown to share with us a few pearls of wisdom.

What brought you to Chicago?

From Chicago…worked as Vidal Sassoon, Paul Glick, and Heidi’s from early 80’s to ’92. Traveled, taught, and worked in Austin, Baton Rouge, and NY until returning to Chicago to live permanently. Home again! YAY!

Why did you want to become a hair stylist / colorist?

I was on the school bus (I think in 4th or 5th grade) and I sat kiddy corner and one row behind a girl who I’d never seen before. Her hair was long and scraggly covering her face, and she couldn’t see me looking at her, but underneath that mess, I could see that she was absolutely gorgeous if only someone would give her makeover.

What cut/color/style are your clients asking for most right now?

We’re still doing multi-dimensional color, Balayage, and Keratin Smoothing services, but we’re re-introducing the “beachy” American Waves which are great for scrunching soft loops or adding body, but fades out more naturally than the permanents of old that were TOO permanent!

What hair care advice do you give most often?

Use professional shampoo and conditioner if nothing else in a product line, and trim hair within at least 6-8 to keep shape and maintain health

How do you stay up to date on the latest hair techniques and trends?

I go to classes, shows, and read all the industry publications. Fortunately, it’s also easy for me to keep up with what my colleagues in Chicago, New York, and L.A. are doing because they are at the top of the high-end beauty, salon, and fashion scenes.
